Make Something

The challenge for the June Synchronous Hackathon is inspired by Adam Savage the co-host of MythBusters, who gave a talk a couple of weeks ago at Maker Faire Bay Area 2012.

In Adam’s talk titled “Why We Make”, he describes how and why we are compelled to make the things we make. He also introduces the following manifesto:

“It doesn’t matter what you make and it doesn’t matter why, the importance is that you are making something.”

So to support this manifesto I’m asking hackerspaces worldwide to take part in the Synchronous Hackathon over the weekend of the 16th and 17th of June.

And the challenge for members and visitors is very simple “Make Something”.

Global Hackerspace Cupcake Challenge 2012

This weekend the 18th and 19th of February will be the second Global Hackerspace Cupcake Challenge.

Hackerspaces worldwide are challenged to bake, decorate and package a single cupcake and send it to another hackerspace. The receiving hackerspace will then open and judge on various topics including decoration, condition and taste.

Global Hackerspace Cupcake Challenge

For the January Synchronous Hackathon we’re going to try something a little different. Over the weekend of the 15th and 16th we’re inviting hackerspaces worldwide to bake, package and post a cupcake to another hackerspace.

This is a friendly competition so be creative and innovate. Full details are included on the Global Hackerspace Cupcake Challenge wiki page.

Going forward for each hackathon we hope to have a new friendly challenge or shared activity. So get involved or suggest a new challenge.

Irish Hackerspaces Week

hackerspaces.ie logoThe hackerspace movement in Ireland has expanded over the last three-four months.  With three hackerspaces moving into new premises 091 Labs in Galway, Hackerspace Cork and TOG in Dublin.  And with good progress with another two groups actively looking for premises including HackNI in Belfast and Limerick Hackerspace.

So with an eye on a bit of blatant self promotion, we’ve decided to run a number of events next week 14th-22nd of August and call the whole series Irish Hackerspaces Week.  We are hoping to use the events to show our spaces and Irish hacker culture in a good light in both the local and national media, while providing a range fun and informative talks, workshops and social events.

The week has been scheduled to coincide with the 10th Global Synchronous Hackathon on the weekend of the 21st-22nd of August. So hopefully we’ll be able to interact with a wider range of hackerspaces worldwide.
